The public operator for the French school network abroad
The Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) is the public body, under the supervision of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, that coordinates the network of French educational schools abroad.
At the start of the 2025 academic year, this network brings together 612 educational schools located in 138 countries, educating more than 400,000 pupils, of whom a third are French and two-thirds are of other nationalities. All of these schools are accredited by the Ministry of National Education and Youth.
The AEFE fulfils three main missions in the service of families and schools: ensuring the education of French children outside France, contributing to the promotion of the French language and culture worldwide, and strengthening cooperation between the French and foreign education systems.
Beyond its coordination mission, the AEFE brings its network to life through major collective projects, notably the Orchestra and Choir of French High Schools Worldwide, inter-school sporting challenges, and pupil exchange programmes that allow students to experience a truly international environment. The Agency is also invested in educational innovation, particularly around digital technology and artificial intelligence, to ensure teaching remains in step with contemporary challenges.

An approved school
The AEFE network comprises three types of school status: schools managed directly by the Agency, schools in receipt of an agreement with the Agency, and partner schools.

This status means that the school is run by a local foundation, the Anna de Noailles Foundation, and benefits from a formal partnership with the AEFE: it receives support from the Agency in educational matters and can accommodate teachers seconded from the French Ministry of National Education. It is subject to the same approval requirements as the rest of the network, thereby guaranteeing full compliance with the official curricula of the French Ministry of National Education.

Educational assistance for French families
As part of its public service remit, the LFAdN must enable all French citizens to enrol their child, subject to available places and without means testing.
Therefore, the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) can provide French children living abroad with schooling assistance in the form of a scholarship.
The scholarships awarded cover tuition fees, either fully or in part. The consular services of the French Embassy in Romania assess the scholarship application file.
They can be awarded to children enrolled in pre-elementary (nursery), elementary (primary) and secondary (lower and upper secondary) education cycles.
